Benefits
The benefits of MLD are many and can be profound.
- Pre (Cosmetic) Surgery – Prior to surgery MLD can lead to an improved lymphatic function which results in healthier body tissues and a stronger immune system. This can contribute to quicker recovery.
- Post (Cosmetic) Surgery – Post-surgery clients can take advantage of MLD’s ability to alleviate bruising and swelling. MLD can also reduce inflammation and the appearance of some scars.
- Skin Conditions – Regular MLD can have a beneficial effect on facial acne and rosacea.
- Ear, Nose & Throat – Chronic sinusitis, chronic rhinitis, chronic tonsillitis, impaired hearing post-ear infection can be treated with an intense course of MLD.
- Chronic Conditions – Arthritis, ME and other immune-related conditions can all be improved with short but frequent MLD sessions. MLD therapy will not be administered during an acute episode.
- Fluid retention – Pre-menstrual syndrome, tired puffy eyes, swollen ankles and swollen legs during pregnancy can all be much relieved through MLD
- Detoxification – MLD can be a key contributor to a committed detoxification programme. MLD has a tonic effect on intestinal peristalsis which in turn will aid digestion. MLD intensifies the detox process by increasing the removal of waste products, toxins and excess fluid from the body’s tissues.
- Stress Reduction – MLD has a significant relaxing effect on the nervous system and promotes more restful sleep and improved digestion.
- Constipation – MLD treatment stretches the wall musculature and as a result of the relaxing effects MLD has on the autonomous nervous system it promotes peristalsis (contraction of the intestinal musculature).
- Improved Immune System – Improved lymphatic function leads to healthier body tissue and a stronger better-prepared immune system. MLD helps distribute lymphocytes (defence cells) and speeds up the removal and destruction of pathogens and harmful substances. Regular maintenance sessions can be a boost for anyone and result in an enhanced defence system.
- Down’s Syndrome – The special attention and care of MLD therapy has been reported to bring good results. The symptoms brought on by cerebral lymph congestion subside and psychological behaviour is positively influenced: children are more alert, their physical restlessness subsides and their activity becomes more purposeful.
- Lymphoedema – A fully qualified MLD Therapist generally treats lymphoedema of diagnosed origin by means of CDT- Combined Decongestive Therapy comprising MLD, the application of compression bandages, remedial exercises and skin care. During the maintenance phase regular MLD sessions, remedial exercises, skin care and the wearing of compression garments maintain and optimise the results achieved. Violetta offers maintenance MLD sessions and does not apply CDT from home but can refer you to another MLD therapist or if available a NHS Lymphoedema Clinic nearest to you.
- Post-Mastectomy – A fully qualified MLD therapist is trained to divert the lymph from the impaired lymphatic region to a well functioning one. MLD has been proven to improve the functioning of lymphatics following invasive surgery. The main support groups, such as Cancer BACUP, the Lymphoedema Support Network and the British Lymphology Society recommend MLD as the most appropriate treatment following surgery. Violetta provides maintenance MLD sessions and does not apply CDT from home but can refer you to another MLD therapist or if available a NHS Lymphoedema Clinic nearest to you.
